Bicycle infrastructure – infrastructure dedicated and made available for use by cyclists includes bicycle paths, combined bicycle and pedestrian paths, bicycle lanes, cycling routes, bicycle trails and, where permitted, sidewalks. Roads used by drivers are also part of bicycle infrastructure, except where bicycle traffic is prohibited, such as many motorways and expressways. The infrastructure also includes amenities for cyclists such as bicycle racks, bicycle storage, bicycle shelters, service stations as well as signs and traffic signals. There are guides defining different types of bicycle road infrastructure, including the British Department of Transport Geometric Design of Pedestrian, Cycle and Equestrian Routes manual, the Sustrans Design Manual, UK Department of Transport Local Transport Note 2/08: Cycle Infrastructure Design, the Danish Road Directorate's Registration and Classification of Paths guide, the Dutch CROW, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Guide for Bicycle Facilities, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), and the National Association of City Transportation Officials USA (NACTO) Urban Bikeway Design Guide. In Poland, such a document was published by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. Regional implementations are also available, such as the guidelines of the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis. In the Netherlands, the Tekenen voor de fiets design manual recommends a width of at least 2 meters or 2.5 meters if used by over 150 bicycles per hour. The cities of Utrecht and 's-Hertogenbosch specify a minimum width of 2 meters for new bicycle paths. The Netherlands also has protected intersections for cyclists crossing roads.
